Robert D. Palmer was an accomplished guitarist, record producer, Grammy-nominated songwriter, mentor, consultant, touring musical director, and film composer. Blessed with success in the industry he loved, Robert’s extensive career spanned over forty years and across multiple genres. But, behind the scenes of his career’s success, Robert was struggling with severe bipolar depression… and no one knew. Determined to keep it hidden, afraid of how he would be perceived and treated within the industry if his illness was revealed, Robert hid his pain for years—until he was forced to seek help. He found a therapist, took their prescriptions and medications, and tried to let the treatment work, but it gave him little more than short-term relief to the edge of pain.
On October 30, 2018, Robert’s life was changed with a chance decision. After being notified by a genealogy site, Robert discovered he had a son, Kary Youman. With their lives now intersected, Robert and his son discovered in each other an emotional and spiritual bond, one that would help them both heal and move forward. Over several months and a growing relationship, Robert shared his journey—from the success of his career as a professional musician to the secrets he kept hidden from everyone around him: the distorted reality of living and suffering from depression, his past suicide attempt, and jail time.
The fragility of mental health—something so pervasive in our modern-day society—is far too often hidden behind masks and the cover of success and normality, left unaddressed and ignored.
From Misery To Hope is a powerful, heartwarming, and deeply personal story of faith, forgiveness, connection, and healing.
